Maren Kring’s “Day at the Beach” is just one serving of photography in the group exhibition “Regarding the Hearts United” at the Bread and Butter Cafe through Nov. 8.
“Regarding the Hearts United,” on display at the Bread and Butter Cafe, 719 E. Broad St., features work by Savannah College of Art and Design students and staff with proceeds slated to benefit orphans in Zimbabwe.
Interior design/photography student Jelena Lustica, computer art student Jeff Geissler, painting graduate student Cynthia White and printmaking lab technician Deborah Chaney exhibit with photography students Julie Silva, Gray Lyons, Karin Ruschendorf, Lisette Schaessler, Moon Kim and Maren Krings.
The exhibition, which encompasses paintings, printmaking, mixed media and photography, is the brainchild of Krings. She got the idea for the exhibition while completing an internship with local activist and photographer Katherine Demicco on a social documentary about the orphanages.
Krings, who is from Germany, said she thought that an exhibition to raise funds would be a natural way to assist her mentor and help out needy children an ocean away. All funds from work sold through the closing date of the show, which is Nov. 8, will be turned over to Demicco, who is working overseas.
Krings intends to likewise document firsthand this donation process and the people it will effect.
“It is not just one of those charities where you donate and you never know where the proceeds go, or who it benefits,” said Krings. “This way, people who donate funds by purchasing work will eventually have the opportunity to see the good it did.”
The Bread and Butter Cafe is collaboration between Union Mission, Savannah Technical College and America’s Second Harvest; the groups are not charging the artists to use the space.
Ricardo Ochoa’s Artillery Punch, a symphonic quintet from the Savannah Symphony, also is donating their time and talents by playing at the reception Oct. 17, 6-8 p.m. Artillery Punch has planned an evening of experimental music to greet attendees while SCAD’s Photogroup is making a donation by supplying the refreshments.
The Bread and Butter Café is open daily 11-1:30 p.m.
